Hello Girls-

I am not very far along but the furthur I get the more things start to get the best of me like..Labor, Stitches, Breastfeading, ect. I am going to be four months on Feb 27th.

I would really like advice and opinions from any mother willing..

LABOR: I am so scared of Labor especially because I am going to do it without an epidural. From my understanding on Labor it only hurts during Labor, not after, what are all of your opinions?? (Yes I know it is different for everyone)

STITCHES: Wow buddy I don't even want to get started on these. First off how do they sew you? Do they numb you?? Is it likely for you to get them?? Do they bother you after they are done?? Can you feel them semeing you up?

BURNING: Does it burn when you pee after you give Birth?? If so, how long does that last?

BREASTFEADING: How long does in normally take for the baby to get a hang of things?

SEX OF BABY: When did you find out the sex of your baby?? How likely is it to find out in the fourth month? As I have said earlier today I am going to be four months on the 27th, and I have an ultra sound on the 31st, I am just curious to find out if anyone was able to find out the sex of their baby this early on??

Any other advice that I did not ask about and you would like to inform me on...please feel free!!

Looking forward to hearing back from everybody!!! Very Happy

Thank You for you time! It is greatly appreciated!!

Congrats on expecting! That is great! The best advice I can give you is to keep asking questions. Especially if this is your first...there are a ton of things that will hit you. Write questions down as you think of them, and bring it up with your doc next time you go in.

OK....here is my response to your questions...

LABOR: Labor hurts...period. However, you can make it through, with or without an epi. My suggestion, though...don't completely rule it out. I didn't plan on getting one either, but my little guy was being very difficult and I was getting really uncomfortable. I used Stadol (sp?) first, and ended up getting my epi at about a 7 or so. Not too bad. I could still fell the contractions, but wasn't wanting to scream in pain.

STITCHES: I only had a small tear, so not many stitches. I didn't seem to have much of a problem either. If you have the epi...you are hopefully still pretty numb. However, I think most of the time, they give you a little local anesthetic as well. This would be something to ask you doc about.

BURNING: I didn't have much. You kind of learn to sit a little different to keep it from buring. haha!!!

BREASTFEEDING: Can't help you here. My little guy refused. Some do. My nephew latched on quickly, my first niece refused, and second niece caught on quickly as well. Every kid is different. Check with your hospital and see if they have a lactation specialist. They are great for showing you little tricks to make it easier.

SEX OF BABY: We didn't find out, so sorry...no help there.

Like I said...there are a lot of things that will come up. Don't be afraid to ask. There is a book out there that I would recommend. It's called "The Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy" by Vicki Iovine. I loved it. It's very relevant and helped me come up with questions to ask the doc. Check it out if you get a chance.

Good luck!

I got induced at 38 weeks. At 4 centimeters, I was taking a nap (was barely feeling anything) and my doctor came in to check me. He asked me if I wanted my epidural. I was thinking about waiting but knew it wasn't going to be long before I started really feeling things. Didn't feel anything the rest of labor. Now after I had her and he fininshed stitching me up, my feeling started coming back. I don't want to scare you but it was VERY painful Shocked I didn't want to move because everytime I tried the pain was just excrutiating. They gave me a tylenol for the pain which did nothing. I decided not to breastfeed (wasn't really liking it) so then they gave me a Vicadin. That worked wonders Very Happy But I would much rather have that pain again than have to go through the whole thing without an epidural. But anyway, sorry for rambling. Laughing

The doctor might beable to see what the sex of the baby is.
Sorry I can't remember anything else that you wrote in your post HeHe.

OK first; you're only 4 months and you're already starting to stress out bad...you need to relax, you have a way to go yet, and the stress really affects your baby!

LABOR: I am so scared of Labor especially because I am going to do it without an epidural. From my understanding on Labor it only hurts during Labor, not after, what are all of your opinions?? (Yes I know it is different for everyone)

OK Labour is SO SO different for everyone, you won't know what is going to happen, untill it happens! Yes it is nerve wracking, but you really need to relax! Also, afterwards you can get whats called "afterpains" which is you uterus still contracting after you've delivered the baby. It is just shrinking back down. I never had it, but like I said everyone is different.

STITCHES: Wow buddy I don't even want to get started on these. First off how do they sew you? Do they numb you?? Is it likely for you to get them?? Do they bother you after they are done?? Can you feel them semeing you up?

You may or may not need stitches. Like I said you won't know, anything can happen. They might numb you, but you might just be so numb from giving birth that it wont bother you...I don't know much about stitches, I had an emerg section after a very long and grueling labour so I had staples lol! I will tell you that they actually felt good to be taken out tho...haha!

BURNING: Does it burn when you pee after you give Birth?? If so, how long does that last?

Never burned me. I did have a section, but I did push for 3 hours and my daughter was RIGHT THERE for a long time, the doc could see/feel her head, and I was very swollen "down there" after from that. But yea I don't remember it burning, but I was hevily medicated...Hun burning while peeing is nothing after you've delivered a baby, don't stress about THAT! Laughing

BREASTFEADING: How long does in normally take for the baby to get a hang of things?

Every baby is different. Some babies latch right on with no problems, while some take a lot of trying, and others never get the hang of it...It depends on your nipples too.

The sex of your baby is usually determined at or around 20 weeks. I do not think you can find it out that early (4 mos) It also depends on wether or not the baby wants to cooperate during the U/S. It may be facing the wrong way...

Might I suggest that you do some research, you'll get a lot more straightforward awnsers from doctors and such if you go to www.babycenter.com or www.webmd.com and search for what you want to know!

RELAX!!!!! No turning back now! Laughing

All your questions are perfectly normal. Instead of stressing over wondering so many things, ask other Moms (like us) the fear of the unknown is much worse then reality!

LABOR: First off, I need to ask- why have you already decided against an epidural? There is no doubt that you don't NEED any pain medication, but it does make ALL the difference in the world. Labor hurts. . .pretty bad. . .but you CAN do it!

STITCHES: I had a c-section after 24 hours of labor, so I cannot give you much info about tearing / stitches. I do that that they numb you before stitching you up. . .if they have to stitch you at all.

BURNING: again, I can't hlpe you on this one, sorry!

BREASTFEADING: Ah, this I know alot about! All babies are different, and while you hear plenty of horror stories about the difficulties of breastfeeding, most babies latch on just fine. Some get the hang of it immediately after birth, and some takes longer. Some women find it easy, and some woman find breastfeeding impossibe (for mulitple reasons) If you plan of breastfeeding, arm yourself with knowledge. Read as much as you can, and ask all the questions you can think of while in the hospital. and DEFINITLY don't stress about wether or not you will be able to breastfeed. You will, or you won't. . .either way it won't make you a good or bad mother! Plenty of Moms lovingly breastfeed, and plenty of moms lovingly formula feed. Very Happy

SEX OF BABY: Unless you are getting a 3D ultrasound (which would only be if complications are expected) a regular ultrasound won't show the babies sex as early as the fourth month.

You are going to be fine, keep asking questions as knowledge will calm your nerves. Congratulations!

Suzanne- I am so against epidurals because I absolutely HATE needles. Just getting my blood taken drives me insane. Not to mention women were able to go through labor before the epidural was around. It would also make me proud of myself to know that I did it on my own! Laughing

Hannah's Mommy- It's hard not to worry because it seems like just yesterday I was six weeks pregnant and now I am already 12 1/2 weeks pregnant. Shocked

you're not even halfway! You need to relax because your baby feels the stress, and it's REALLY not good for him/her at ALL! Yes it is a daunting thing to look forward too, but you'll have to do it either way...just seriously try to relax and ENJOY the rest or your free time while you still can!

Yea I realized just a few hours ago, that when I stress out or start yelling, the baby gets really mad and starts kicking me in the ribs! Shocked and it really kinda hurts.

Just a quick little thought about epidurals...I don't especially like needles either. However, I found that the contractions, and back labor were more than I had expected. The good news...I had a great anesthesiologist...and since the needle was a little poke and a cool sensation...it was WAY better than the contractions. Plus...it is behind you...you can't watch it, which I found makes it a little easier.

I know that you aren't wanting an epi, but all I suggest is that you don't completely rule it out. Really talk with your doctor and your delivery nurses (although you have a while to worry about that...haha). They will let you know when that window of opportunity is running out. Just don't let anyone force you into taking it or not taking it. You are the one who is feeling the contractions.

For now, try to enjoy your pregnancy. I know there are a lot of questions that will come up, but try not to stress too much. It isn't good for you or the baby. Cherish this time...your life will never be the same!

Keep us up to date!

O>K> time for me to weigh in and hopefully not offend anybody! Laughing Labour... it hurts ,no getting around it,it just does, I wouldn't rule out a epidural as you may need it! get as much information as you can,the more you know, the less there is to be scared about and the easier deali :ng with your labour will be!
Stitches,I've had plenty, they should give you a local befor they stitch you and I always ask for the gas while they put the local in because it stings!
Burning,it burns when you pee with stitches but if you lean forward you shouldn't burn and the stitches heal really fast and then the burning will stop!
Breastfeeding like the rest of parenting is a confidence trip ,you have to have confidence that you can do it,and sometimes with some babies it still will not work,it is important to remember that you sre no less of a mother because you bottle feed Laughing
Sex of baby,I could find out at the 18 week scan byt some babies are not so easy to see and a word of warning I wastold my 3rd baby was a girl until the34 week scan...his name is Marcus LOL
Good luck and the important thing to remember is that it will all be worth it,and I think that all the mums here agree with me there!

Everyone seems to have covered your questions, so no need to repeat! Laughing If you do have a chance, I recommend checking a book that talks about what to expect during childbirth...The Official Lamaze Guide: Giving Birth with Confidence - http://www.lamaze.org/birth_confidence/.
