Any good ideas on how to introduce a sippy cup? At what age are kids usually doing it and good at it?

I would start with a sippy cup that does not have a spill valve. Some are very hard to suck and may discourage a child. I think it depends on each child individually. I gave my dd a cup at 8mos., but she didn't get the hang of it for several months after, but she was a preemie. Some start at 6 months. As far as introducing, I would help at first-show how to do it. At every meal have a cup available for them if they want.

I started my daughter on a sippy cup at 9 months old. I agree with the previous poster, start with a sippy cup with out a valve, hold the sippy cup for your child and just let your child get the idea that the formula/breast milk will come out of the cup too. I had good luck with the Gerber starter sippy cup when I did give her a cup with a valve in it. The spout is soft for them for an easier transition. She was drinking good out of it by 10 months old. Good luck.

I started my daughter at about 6 months. She can drink no problem, but I have to hold it for her still. We don't really use one most of the time though. She seems to prefer the cups with the built in straws. And she can hold these herself to drink. She is now 8 months old.

This is probably a stupid question, but when do you start offering it more than just at dinner time - or should I do that from the start?
Thank you all - you've really helped me! |

I would offer it everytime you offered the bottle, unless your child absolutely will not drink from it.
