I just went for my first OB/GYN visit and the scann was offered to me.
I have refused and agreed only to have it for medical reasons.
Since there is no immediate indication for having one I did not get one.
I don't believe in scanns either, of course it is just my opinion

Kassi , you are sooo right. Thanks for the tips,
I will talk to my doc about it but since she is very flex I think that
it will be okay to postpone ultrasound till aboslutely necessary.

I have heard that the rutine ultrasounds are not conclusively good for the baby but the ones that are done for the keep sakes are much worse for the amount of energy they emit.

Absolutely fascinating thing:

I asked my doctor friend who is pregnant and - when is she going to have her ultrasound done and her answer was - Never!

She said that she does believe that it does more harm than good to people who don' t need them and if they need them than it is good thing but than again.. who can really be a judge?

Also she suggested that the way it is done, allows to much freedom to apply to strong energy to the fetus without actually even a need for it.

since those are not their kids, they don't care that much.

that was not too encouraging.

My friend who is 5 mo preg, said that she declined ultrasound at 12 weeks and now her doc is suggesting here to take one for the baby sake

I asked her what kind of benefits can come up at this stage and she said that the doc said as following:

1. knowing if you have placenta previa
2.to find out if baby is not underdeveloped
3. to find out the amount of aminiotic fluid
4. to find out if there is no spina bifida

I don't quite get it because the placenta still can adjust by the time is right, that is what I know for fact.

About the baby's development - so if it is underdeveloped and if you find out what you really can do? I guess nothing. so that is questionable for me

about the aminiotic fluid - hm.. that bits me . I thought that it is pretty much either you got enough of it or some loss but if your waight is gaining and belly is growing one can be pretty much sure it is enough :-)

spina bifida thing - well, since the ultrasound can not be 100% acurate it is so easy to make mistake.

that is my take on it. at least.
I guess in this case I really don't see the benefit of scanning. unless I am wrong.

If you are unsure about so many things then why dont you ask your doctor and educate yourself on the facts. You can also check out the post "Check for Vasa Previa during Ultrasound Appointment" near the top of the page.

If your baby stops growing more than likey you will need to deliver early, if you don't have enough fluid you may have to deliver early. If a child has spina bifida there is surgery that can be performed in utero.

I am very cautious about those things since the error margin is so large.
just my opinion
