In Reply to: Is it unreasonable to expect my 6 month old to take 2 hour naps? posted by Michelle Karns on January 24, 2003 at 12:22:42:
I got this info from http://www.babycenter.com/baby/babysleep/index/#teachsleep this is what it says for children between 6-9 mo By 8 months, most children are taking only two naps a day. If you can, have your baby nap in the same place that he sleeps at night. A set naptime in a set place will ensure that your child gets the sleep he needs. The best times for naps are mid- to late morning for morning naps and early afternoon for afternoon naps. Don't let your child nap past 4 in the afternoon, or he'll have problems going to sleep at night. At least three hours should elapse between the end of an afternoon nap and bedtime. Make naptimes consistent Try to set up an increasingly consistent structure and schedule for your baby's two daily naps. Put him down at the same times each day so that he develops a good 24-hour sleep rhythm. If your baby is having sleep problems, look at his nap patterns: What time does he nod off? Does he sleep too much, or not enough? (For guidelines on how much sleep he should be getting, click here.) Then you can adjust his nap schedule accordingly. For example, if your baby naps late in the afternoon and is having trouble falling asleep at night, move both his naptime and bedtime up 15 minutes a day until he's sleeping when you want him to. My view- at that age my son was taking a two hour nap from 10am to 12 and a one hour nap from 3pm to 4pm and went to bed at 8pm. I always laid him down at the same time and and got him up at the same time. Sometimes in the beginning he wouldn't go right to sleep he'd just lay there and play but after a while he got the idea that that was his "quite/sleep" time. I think you just have to create a routine for him, he'll get the hang of it soon. God luck
