I believe that you necessarily need to use oil paint when painting wood. And remember that when the baby starts teething, gnawing at the wooden slats may be a source of comfort for him/her. Paints today should have pretty comprehensive labelling and your local paint dealer, especially if he's been around for a while should be able to direct you to a baby-safe product. For more information go to google.com and do a search using the terms "paint safety baby". You will get a lot of useful results.
