How to get a 3.5yr.old to learn ABC'S

I'm having problems trying to get my BF's son to learn his alpha's and numbers.He constantly watches cartoons all the time so could that be a problem of why he doesn't pay any attention to learning.I'll tell him the letter is A then i'll tell him to point at it then say the letter,then he'll say I don't know.It's like his learning span is gone.How can I help him.?He's only here for about 2-3 weeks,then he'll go home to mommy,so I don't know if she helping him.I learned my alpha's and numbers b4 the age of 4.I really need to help him.
