In Reply to: Gentain violet or diflucan-what works? posted by tara richer on April 03, 2003 at 12:41:19:
: I have a little boy who has thrush since he was 1mth old. He is coming up to 3mths and he has been through 2 bouts of nystatin...which does not work...My doctor just prescribed gentain violet..I am not feeling so good about using it as I have heard that it can be harmful to babies...I've read about diflucan, called my doctor and he told me to call Mother Risk(Hotline)and ask them what they thought of both drugs...Is there anybody who has tried Gentain violet and been successful? Hi Tara,

Are you in Toronto? MotherRisk is located at the Hospital For Sick Children.
I'm from Toronto and my doctor would not presribe Gentian Violet for my son (he said it was too messy), and also would not prescribe Diflucan because he said it is too strong for babies. I also talked to several pharmacists and they also said it was too strong for use on young babies (my son was two months at the time). It is used in the US, but I don't think they use it in Canada for infants. My son was on Nystatin many times and it NEVER cleared up his thrush. The doctor said just to let it run it's course because it did not really bother him or prevent him from eating. It can causing a burning sensation when feeding. It's up to you if you want to bother with Gentian Violet. Remember if you are breastfeeding, to also treat yourself, and if you are bottlefeeding, be extremly careful with cleaning the nipples and anything that comes into contact with his mouth. Eventually, the thrush will die off.
