: I PUT MY 5 MONTH OLD DOWN TO SLEEP ON HER BACK. WHEN I GO TO CHECK ON HER SHE HAS ROLLED TO HER STOMACH. THIS HAPPENS SEVERAL TIMES A NIGHT. DO I NEED TO KEEP SWITCHING HER BACK TO HER BACK? OR SHOULD I JUST NOT WORRY ABOUT IT. I KNOW BABIES ARE SAFER SLEEPING ON THEIR BACK BECAUSE OF THE THREAT OF SIDS, BUT IS SHE PAST THE AGE WHEN SIDS IS MOST LIKELY TO OCCUR?

My 4 1/2 month little boy hasn't slept on his back since he was 2 months old. He's a wiggly baby and a bit gassy as a newborn and just by a fluke one night we found he slept well on his belly. Now every book you read says absolutely don't let them sleep on their bellies. Older Mothers that I talk to say their babies always slept on their stomachs. I think the SIDS issue is serious but any attentive Mom will check on their sleeping baby several times even during the night and as long as there is nothing near their face and they are not overheated they should be fine. Especially if she can lift her head up. My little boy rolls from his belly to his back several times a night and wakes himself up. We usually get him up change and feed him and he goes right back to sleep. I am hoping sometime soon he'll learn to sleep in other positions that his belly. Good luck to you.
