disapline

was wondering if anyone knows how to come to some agreement with step-father on appropriate disapline for children ages 6 and 10 when we come from two totally different upbrings!!!??? sometimes i think his punishments are too harsh. where do we find a middle ground?? and what is age appropriate punishments???? thanks so much for any feed back
