My baby is the same and what I've learnt to do is this-- if he wakes up crying I know he hasn't had enough sleep and I go in and put him back to sleep. If he wakes up cooing and playing then that's my sign that he's had enough sleep. The only catch is that my baby nurses to sleep, always has even though I tried from the beginning to avoid this -- so I will nurse him in bed back to sleep. He usually has two 2 hour naps a day around noon and then around 4pm (sometimes a short one in the morning if he's up especially early). It makes a world of difference when I do this because he is an absolute angel -- never fussy until his next nap time. On the weekends when out schedule is screwed up because we're usually out and about more I see the difference as he can be incredibly fussy and I know its all from lack of enough sleep.
