My son started this also when he was 5 months old, he is 7 months now and he does this every so often... I also have a 19 month old and in my expereince I have found that, if they are used to sleeping all night long with a feeding they are probably not hungry... In my cause my son was teething and all I had to do was give him something to drink (water or juice), a little tylenol and some oral on those gums he he was ready to go back to sleep. My son also never wanted to sleep on this back since 2 months. My husband is a ped. and he said that if they have good head control belly sleeping is fine. He now my son will wake up if is on his back, he loves to be on his tummy.

Try acting as though he is teething and try the tylenol and oral gel, this should probably do the trick... Because of you start feeding him in the middle of the night again he will expect it more...

Of course, you are checking for the obvious first:
wet, dirty, too cold, too hot
