I highly recommend Golden Retrievers and Labs. I had a lab growing up, very gentle and a lot of fun. We have 3 goldens now and they are great, especially with our 9 month old son! They have been gentle with him since day one. He uses them as a chewing toy, something to pull up on, etc. and they could care less. He pulls their ears, tails, and sides and they just take it. If they don't like it, they just get up and move and leave him with a handfull of fur.

Labs and Golden Retrievers are also easy to train. I would suggest using the crate training for housebreaking them. We have tried all of the methods and crate training is the fastest and works the best.
