I think a medium to large breed dog would be best. Muts are almost always good natured because of the mixing of temperments. I would suggest going to the animal shelter and having your children pick out a dog there. Most shelters will let you play with the dog before you take it and also have an exchange policy if it doesn't work out at home. A puppy for children that young may not be the best thing for you, but you know your kids best. We have a 3 year old Lab/Aussie mix and he's always been great with my 2 year old daughter. Shelter dogs are often tagged whether they are children friendly or not too. I would start at the shelter first.
