: Tina got crate training right. You simply put the dog in the crate when you are not at home. If you get a Lab or Golden, buy the LARGE crate then block part of it off while they are small. Another usefull tip. When you are home, put the puppy in the crate after playing with him for a little while. Make him/her stay in there for 5 or so minutes. Then take them out of the crate and put them outside immediately. Also, don't feed the puppy in the crate. : Labs and Goldens both shed. Labs have shoter hair than Goldens. I have to say that it is easier for us to clean up our Goldens hair then it was our Labs hair. The shorter hair tends to stick more and harder to vaccuum up. Both breeds usually love to be brushed though, something your kids could do when they are old enough. Brushing really helps cut way down on the shedding. Also, to keep their coats shiny and healthy, we put a little grease or viatim E oil on their food once a week. : One thing about buying large dogs. You really have to be careful where you get the dog. Don't buy the dog from a pet store. These dogs are known for their mass breeding and will usually develop some bad health problems. I would buy the dog from a reputable breeder. Make sure both parents don't have Hip Dysplasia. You can also take the puppy to the vet early on and they can tell you if there are any problems with its hips at that point, that doesn't mean there won't be in the future though. Just do your homework and don't buy or adopt the first cute thing you see! : We bought our first two goldens from a reputable breeder and they have had no health issues. We felt sorry for our last dog and bought her from a pet store, she is a pure bred golden. She has had health problems gallore. We have to give her allergy shots everyday and have spent thousands of dollars on vet bills for her, so please stay away fromthe pet stores! : Here are some links for crate training. : http://www.perfectpaws.com/crt.html : http://www.ddfl.org/behavior/cratetraining.htm : http://www.siriusweb.com/AAD/crate.html : Feel free to e-mail me with any questions! algold29@aol.com : Angela
