Blood in stool

Blood in stool appears in two ways.

Bright red streaks or bloody drops if the bleeding is at the end of the digestive system (colon, anus, etc.)

The other way is if the stool is black like coal. That suggests bleeding early in the digestive system (esophagus, stomach). Digested blood turns stool black, Non digested blood appears as red streaks.

Some medicine turns stool black. Pepto-bismal is one such medicine. So those of you who have black poop, or are seeing black poop in their kids, don't freak out and call your doctor if you are or your child is taking medicine. Check with the side effects.
