Have any of you taken the time to research your information? Babywise is a very contraversial book. Why? Because the methods it preaches are cruel and dangerous to a childs emotional development. I actually got the book when I was pregnant and could not believe what I was reading. Babies, by design, are not supposed to sleep straight through the night. They cry because they need something and its your job as a parent meet their needs. I don't have time to sit here and educate you on child development. But I will say this much...a child becomes independent and secure when they are provided with a secure base. That means they have a parent who is responsive and caring. The Ferber method is a cruel practice and I hope that you do not try it. It basically demands that you leave your child to cry it out in the middle of the night. Ferber recanted this method after his children were grown. He no longer endorses it. A child who is left to cry it out is being taught that they have no one to rely on. The people they trust will not respond. These are the kids who grow up insecure. What it all comes down to is parents are to busy to nurture so they force their babies on a schedule, they force them to sleep the same cycle as an adult. That way its easier on the parents, with no regard to the child. Its cruel and its wrong. Anyone who endorses babywise needs to have their head examined or take a few classes in child development. Or both.
