: Hi Jeanie, I saw that you were a PA. Maybe you can settle a minor disput I am having with my MIL. I clean my 6 mnth old son's ears a few days a week, with a baby q-tip. She says that you should not clean a babies ears. I don't want to hurt him if I'm not supposed to but I don't want things growing out of his ears either. What is the proper care for his ears. And he'll been in the pool more is there any thing I should know.
: Thank you for your help. Welcome to the board

Thank you. It is very important to keep babies ears clean or they will develop severe cerumen (ear wax) buildup and will need to have the ears flushed with peroxide and a syringe in a doctor's office. The ears should be gently cleaned daily with a Q-tip without forcing it into the ear canal. Any over-the-counter ear drops for loosening cerumen may be helfpul along with a Q-tip. Ear drops should only be used if you notice excessive cerumen.
