My son is extremely fair skinned like his Dad. I have to put sunscreen SPF 50 on him whenever we go out, even for longer car rides where he might be in the sun. I also take him swimming all the time. I don't usually put a t-shirt on him while he's playing in the pool. I just make sure that I put the sunscreen on him at least 20 minutes before he goes out. If we swim for very long, I also reapply after he's been in the pool for about 30 minutes then wait a few minutes and allow him to go back in. So far he hasn't been burned at all.
