: I'm a sixteen : : : Yes cortisone does have side effects, but I believe only if used continuously for an extended period of time. : : : If it really is excema, there is no 'lotion' that will help. In fact they could make it worse. : : : Excema is an allergic reaction, either to a food, or something the baby comes into contact with. Wool can be an irritant, so can washing powders, fabric softeners, or ingredients in lotions you use. : : : Some drs think it is too hard to search for the allergen, so they only offer a treatment for the symptom instead of looking for the cause. : : : Are you breastfeeding? It could be something you are eating. You could try keeping a detailed diary of your diet, and exclude common allergens such as dairy, eggs, gluten, peanuts, seafood, one at a time, for at least 3wks each, and see if there's a difference. : : : Don't be afraid to use the cream, it may control the excema in no time at all. : : : Good luck. : : I HAVE HAD EXCEMA SINCE I WAS 16 YEARS OLD. IT CAME ABOUT AFTER I TOOK 6 MONTHS OF CHEMOTHERAPY TREATMENTS FOR HODGKINS DISEASE. THE DR. SAID IT WAS COMMON TO CONTRACT IT AFTER CHEMO, BUT THAT IT USUALLY DISAPPEARS AFTER A FEW MTHS. WELL, HERE I AM AFTER 11 YEARS--MY DR. GOT RID OF MY CANCER, BUT NOONE CAN SEEM TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT MY STUPID EXCEMA. IT DRIVES ME CRAZY!!! I USE A COMPOUND MIXTURE OF MOISTUREL LOTION AND KENALOG. KENALOG IS A STEROIDAL INJECTION THAT IS MIXED WITH THE MOISTUREL LOTION, AND IS NOT MEANT TO BE USED FOR ANY LENGTH OF TIME. I HAVE HAD TO USE IT EVERY DAY FOR THE LAST 11 YEARS. STEROIDS MAKE YOUR SKIN THIN, MAKES YOU BRUISE EASILY, AND MAKES CUTS AND ABRASIONS HEAL MORE SLOWLY. AND WITH THESE SIDE EFFECTS, IT DOESN'T KEEP ME FROM ITCHING ALL THE TIME. I STILL ITCH, ESPECIALLY IN MY SLEEP. AND TO TOP ALL THAT OFF, MY INSURANCE DOES NOT COVER THIS MEDICATION. SO I PAY $25 FOR A 10-DAY SUPPLY. MY EXCEMA IS NOT AN ALLERGY--WE'VE TRIED ALL THOSE MEDS. IF ANYONE HAS HEARD OF ANY OTHER MEDICATIONS, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. MY DR. HAS SEARCHED AND RESEARCHED, TRYING TO FIND ME A MEDICATION THAT WILL WORK AND BE COVERED BY INSURANCE...TO NO AVAIL.

: year old girl and I've had excema since I was a kid -
: about seven. It is really bad now - I get really itchy
: dry skin and my constant scratching draws blood and
: forms scabs. I've only got it on my arms and legs.
: I've been to my doctor so many times and had so many
: different medications it seems pointless going now.
: I'm using Eumovate ointment at the moment. Although
: it does stop the dryness and itchiness (for a while)
: and makes the scabs disappear, when I stop using the
: medication for just a couple of days, it reappears.
: It's not just that, even if it does disappear, it
: leaves really dark marks on my skin. Being asian I
: already have dark sking but the excema leaves in
: darker patches all over my arms and legs. Is there any
: way to get of these marks? They're really ruining my
: life because they look so awful and for the last five
: years I've only ever worn trousers to hide my legs and
: stuff. I can't wear skirts or dresses and I can't do
: sports like swimming. My parents
: are thinking about getting me homeopathic tablets to
: see if they work instead - is this ok?

: : my son is 7mo. old and also has this same condititon. it is so frustrating. i cannot use any soap, shampoo or lotion on him. Not even the "special" ones from the dermatologist. I use cheer free on his clothes. I use a cortizone cream that is a rx. he has good days and bad days. His skin gets so rough and red sometimes. the dr says he may out grow some of it, I hope so. I found the more lotion I use the drier he got. Things i found that work: vaseline and vitamin e oil. vasilene brand has a combo of these two in a cream that has kind of worked for me. if you have found anything that works for you or need support (when people treat you like you are doing this to your child) email me.
