My son slept with us in the bed for the first 3 mos of his life and I thought that was tough.
The only thing I can suggest is that you do it gradually because he is so used to it after 8 mos.
You could start off sleeping in his room with him, maybe on a cot if you have one and put him in his crib/bed. Everyday you could move your bed further away from his until you are out of his room. This way, he will feel more comfortable knowing you haven't abandoned him if you just go "cold turkey".
