: : : My 9 mnth old son has 5 teeth,3 top and 2 bottom. Lately he's taken to grinding his teeth. Is this just part of teething? And will it create any problems with his new teeth?

: : : Thanks.

: : Hi Sue,

: : I was about to ask where you were. Glad to see you back.

: : Teeth grinding (bruxism)is very, very common in babies and mostly do it when they are sleeping which is just a habit and it almost always occur when they get 3 teeth on the top and 2 on the bottom. They are not used to having that many teeth. I would not worry about it and if you try to stop the habit it will probably just encourage him to do it more. It will not cause any damage whatsoever to his teeth and the habit will pass. It can cause damage to an adult who grinds their teeth, but you don't have to worry about that with your baby right now.

: : Hope this helps.

: My DH(34) grinds his teeth at night when he sleeps and drives me crazy. I will ask him tonight if he has done this since he was little. My oldest DD did it for awhile when she was a baby and then as Elizabeth said it passed and she stopped.I 2 was worried.

Hello Rycheymac,

For adults who grind their teeth, a bite plate can be made by a dentist to wear at night because constant grinding can damage teeth in adults and later cause bone loss.
