Both of my kids got Prevnar. They gave it differently though. They had a total of 4 shots, 2, 4, 6 and 18 months. My daughter also had Pneumovax (at age 3), which was the only vaccine for menningitis before Prevnar came out. Prevnar covers 11 or so strains of menningitis, Pneumovax covers 30 something. Before Prevnar, children were not vaccinated until age 3, but now there is a very good vaccine for the most prevalent strains at a much younger age. Both of my kids have minor and typical reactions to vaccines. Soreness at the injection site, low grade fever, crankiness for about 24 - 48 hours afterwards. I just give Tylenol or Motrin. Good luck.

: My son just turned a year and his doctor has asked if we want to get the meningits vaccine (Haemophilus b conjugate vaccine) for him as well as the Chickenpox vaccine. These are both optional and are not covered by our provincial Health Plan which is not an issue since my husband has a great drug plan with his employer.
: I am more concerned with any side effects that he may experience with the meninigitis vaccine as it is fairly new I think.
: Have any other parents had their babies vaccinated for Meningitis? If so, did your baby experience negative side effects and if not, why did you choose not to have your baby vaccinated?
