Hi new-mommie Colic is not a specific condition but a term used to describe ‘excessively long periods of inconsolable crying, in an otherwise healthy thriving baby’. Colic is defined as 3 or more hours of inconsolable crying for 3 or more days per week, for a period of 3 weeks or more. If your child can be consoled when she cries it is not colic. It is not the frequency of bowel movements but the consistency of the stool that determines if a child is constipated or not. If your child passes dry hard pebbly stools she's constipated. If she passes fluid or paste stools, she's not constipated. Babies often grunt, groan, go red in the face and yet pass a normal stool. This is related to them learning which muscles to move. As they learn, there's less effort required. The most common reason for healthy young babies to cry is they can easily become overstimulated and overtired. Rowena
