i agree with Julie and Vivian in that you can try taking gradual steps. My son has had many problems with his digestive system and has had alot of problems sleeping. Some nights the only way for me to get any sleep was to sleep sitting up holding him upright. Even when he started doing a little better he hated his crib. He would act as if he was scared of the crib and immediately wake up screaming. Since he seemed literlay scared to be in there I started changing his diaper in his crib and spending some play time leaned over the edge with him in the crib. I also bought a soothing crib light and music thing and started leaving him in there for a few minutes. He still flipped out when I would try to lay him down for the night so I gave up for a few days. When I tried again He didn't utter a sound and even to sleep by himself. What an improvement! It took about three weeks and he was about four months old. Even though it seemed forever then I'm so glad I didn't force the issue and just kept sleeping with him until he was ready.
