Hi Kelly

Although most women would have recovered before that time, it is possible to be depressed for that long. Sometimes a post-partum depression does not begin for weeks or even months after the child is born. It may also be possible that you experienced a major depressive episode around the time your daughter was 3. Post-partum depression is no different than a major depression. It is given it's name simply because it occurs in the post partum period.

The length of recovery time from any depressive episode (post-partum depression or major depression) varies enornmously between individuals. (In my own case it took well over 12 months.) It greatly depends on the individual's underlying personality. For example if a person normally had a bright, cheery and optomistic personality they are likely to recover sooner than a person who's basic personality was a worrier, anxious and thought the worst of most situations. It would also depend on what the individual did to aid recovery eg. antidepressant medications and counselling. Other things that influence recovery would be the well being of the child eg. on going medical problems with the child could prolong a depressive episode. How supportive family and friends are, can either aid or prolong recovery.

Cheers
Rowena
