My opinion, definately check your sons diaper, wether he complains or not. I change my dd diaper often, every 2-3hrs, depending on if she's peed or not and immediately after she's had a BM. I think of it this way, I wouldn't want to be in a wet/dirty diaper for long so I'm sure a child doesn't either, besides the possibility of diaper rash.
