naps- how can I get baby to nap longer

My baby will only nap for a 1/2 hour. In the afternoon when most babies sleep from 1 to 2 hours, mine will only sleep again for 1/2 hour. He will awake-up and be cranky for a awhile since he has not gotten enough sleep. I try to put him back to sleep but it's no use. Should I just leave him in his crib to cry?

Any advice ???? Anyone else with this problem ?
