hi bonnie,
cradle cap is a build up of natural oils (sebaceous) at the hair line. it can be like ear wax in appearence. yes, gently massaging baby oil or olive oil onto your babies scalp and combing the 'patches' off the next day is the easiest way to remove build up, but take care arround the fontanelle, soft hollow bit at the top of your babies head. there should be nothing but clean hair and scalp when you finish. white patches might indicate something else, so it might be wise to have your baby checked.
p.s the oil will soften the build up, then making it easier to remove. baby shampoo will keep your babies scalp and hair clean and sweet smelling.
good luck.
