Does your baby sleep with you or in a crib in their own room?? My daughter who is now 2 1/2 loved to be held or laying next to me to fall asleep. I kept her at my side for the first 3-4 months, either in bed with me or in a bassinet by my bed. SOOOO many people around me were telling me that it was a bad habit to get into and that she would never sleep on her own. I talked with my own pediatrician about this and he told me that he encourages mother's to hold their babies, rock etc. to fall asleep and that it doesn't mean in any way that your baby will never fall asleep on it's own.

When they are that small, they want the comfort of mommy. Every baby has their own personality and some will be more clingy than others. In my opinion, I don't believe it has a whole lot to do with holding or rocking your baby to sleep.
I didn't get a whole lot of sleep those first few months, but by 4-5 months old, my girl would fall fast asleep on her own.... in her own crib.. in her own room. She slept solid thru the night by 5 months. I think it's because she felt so safe and secure. Everyone will give you different advice and not everything works the same for everyone, but this is what worked for me :-)
