Sleeping on her own

We have been rocking our little one (4m) to sleep and we love it. We would rock her on this little pillow and put her down to sleep on it in her crib (except for nights - we would carefully take the pillow out of her crib). This has become a problem lately since she started rolling from her back to her stomach and I do not want to leave anything soft in her crib....
So we decided to try to teach her to sleep on her own. I read "The Secrets of the Baby Whisperer" that some of you recommended (thank you very much) and I am going to try that approach. Was just wondering what you experiences are, how many times you had to put your baby down, how much crying is involved, how long did it take them to learn to sleep on their own.... any tips you would have...
I know that every baby is different but I am just trying to see what I can expect since I am back at work and in order to be consistent will have to take some time off to be home.... Should I only start with naps and once that is mastered go on night sleep or should I do everything at once...

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Mia
