We didn't pick her up. We patted her chest or rubbed her head while saying, "shh" until she calmed down. Once she stopped fussing, we stopped trying to calm her. I didn't start picking her up until recently. We didn't pick her up at first because when we had done it before, she just cried more. You basically just have to find your niche. Best of luck.
