Have you tried propping him up on his side? You can buy braces to put on their side of him. If that doesn't work, though, I would say as long as your guy can move his head around somewhat you'll be okay. I would also suggest if you're going to do this that you don't swaddle his arms in or put any soft bedding in the crib.
