: Our daughter was born 8 weeks early and stayed in the hosp. for 4 weeks. She is now 19 weeks old and we have had all sorts of difficulty with feedings. A typical day includes eating no more than 2 to 3 oz. e/3 hours sometimes less (1 oz.) and never more. She has reflux (level 3-4)so as soon as she is done that starts for about 20 minutes. During an xray of her feeding, she started reflux when her tummy was half full. After approx. 40 to 50 minutes she begins crying hysterically; arching her back; crunching into a ball; straightening her legs. This lasts anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes. She has a tremendous amount of gas and an inability to have regular bowel movements. Maybe has one per 5-7 days. Usually mom helps her with that. After a healthy BM, she feels much better, but her typical BM's are peanut butter crunch consistency. We were finally referred to a GI doc, who put her on neocate (after trials on soy and Alimentum). As with others, the Neocate does not appear to help much. She is also on Prilosec for reflux. All tests and exams (blood, ultra sound, endoscope/flex sig and bipsies) are normal. Our Pediatrician states she has malabsorption, but not severe enough yet to cause "physical" signs of trauma. Our baby currently weighs 9 lbs. 3 oz. after leaving the hospital (15 weeks ago) at 5 lbs. 8 oz..

: We are wondering if the stories are similar. How long does it take for Neocate to make a difference. And is it as difficult for you as us with getting doc's to understand?

Follow-up,
My son has been on Neocate for the past year. All the symptoms sound like our life of hell for the first three months, except we also had a twin sister. Neocate was a lifesaver for us. It took several weeks for it to kick-in. Our GI doc also had us mix a tsp/2tsp of milk of magnesia to his bottles everyday to help with the BM's. It takes a while to get things regulated but it worked. I hope this helps because those of us who have lived this nightmare understand!
