Hi Roxanne, A heat rash generally appears around the neck and upper chest, rarely on the face. It is a very fine rash like pin pricks. A baby of this age is very proned to long periods of inconsolable crying as a result of becoming overstimulated and overtired. This can present like colic. At this age 1 - 1 1/4 hours awake at any one time (including feeding time) is about all a baby can handle before becoming overtired. Very young babies show tired signs differently than we would expect. Tired signs at this age are clenched fists, jerking arm and leg movements, pulling faces, grizzling or whining. If these signs are overlooked or misinterpreted for pain, hunger or boredom, within a half hour the baby will be screaming inconsolably. At this age, you would expect to see these tired signs in under 20 minutes following a feed. You will recognise tired signs sooner if your baby is not in someone's arms at the time. An overtired baby will find it extremely difficult to settle to sleep and will wake more frequently, often after a 20 - 40 minute nap. Just because a baby has woken doesn't necessarily mean they have had enough sleep. He/she may need to be resettled back to sleep to avoid becoming overtired. I hope you find some of these tips helpful.

Does the rash look a little like acne? A rash on the face, head and neck between the ages of 3 - 9 weeks is very common. It is often referred to as infant acne. The medical name is erythema neonatorum. It's very normal, non harmful and not itchy (and is not related to heat). It generally disappears on it own accord within a few weeks.
