A best friend of mine had a home birth. She sent me the book to read up on and to be ready to help her dh in coaching her. After 48 hours or laboring she was rushed to a nearby hospital because she had infection. They hooked up an epidural and got the baby right out. After the delivery the baby had to be treated for infection, as well, and was full of needles and tubes, etc.
I still think home birth is a good option for an experienced mother, but I would be sure to be near a hospital just incase something goes wrong. I don't know if my girlfriend would have ever forgiver herself if something went terribly wrong and she wasn't close enough to a hospital to save the baby.
